Box and whisker plot:
Used to visually display the median, range and lower and upper quartiles of a data set.

CIE extra grade codes:

  • U - Ungraded
  • X - No result
  • Q - Grade pending

CIE results types:
Grade - chart includes grades A/A* - G and U grades
Grade+ - chart includes grades A/A* - G and U and the additional Q grades
Score - box plot of student percentage scores

Contingency table:
Two way table used to examine the relationship between two variables (in this case the relationship between course results from one year to another).

GPA (Grade point average) CIE:
The average of a student's (or class's) overall grades.

  • IGCSE calculated on a scale of 0-9.
    • (e.g. A*= 9 points, A = 8 points, B = 7 points etc).
  • A/AS levels calculated on a scale of 0-8.
    • (e.g. A = 8 points, B = 7 points, C = 6 points etc).

Example of calculation of CIE IGCSE class GPA:

Student Grade Point allocated Average class GPA
1 B 7
2 C 6
3 A 8
4 A* 9
5 B 7
6 F 3
7 B 7
8 D 5
9 A 8
10 B 7
Total 67/10 = 6.7

GPA percentage = GPA/highest possible GPA (ie 9) x 100 (e.g. 6.7/9 x 100 = 74.4%).

GPA (Grade point average) NCEA:
A weighted average (based on credits) of a student's (or class's) overall grades.

  • Achievement Standards calculated on a scale of 0-4.
    • (e.g. E = 4 points, M = 3 points, A = 2 points and N,V,Y,Z = 0 points).
  • Unit Standards calculated on a scale of 0-2.
    • (e.g. A = 2 points, N,V,Y,Z = 0 points).

Example calculation of class NCEA GPA:

Student Grade Credits Points allocated Average class GPA
1 M 4 3 x 4 = 12
2 M 4 3 x 4 = 12
3 A 4 2 x 4 = 8
4 E 3 4 x 3 = 12
5 M 3 3 x 3 = 9
6 M 3 3 x 3 = 9
7 E 2 4 x 2 = 8
8 N 2 0 x 2 = 0
9 Z 2 0 x 2 = 0
10 A 2 2 x 2 = 4
Total 29 74 74/29 = 2.55

Points = Grade value x Credits
Average GPA = Total points / Total credits
GPA percentage = GPA / Maximum GPA (i.e. 4) x 100 e.g. 2.55 / 4 x 100 = 63.8%

Full GPA:
A student's overall GPA across all assessments.

NCEA grade codes:

  • N - Not achieved
  • A - Achieved
  • M - Merit
  • E - Excellence
  • V - Standard not attempted (blank)
  • Y - Absent
  • Z - Result not available (missing)

NCEA scholarship grades:

  • Y - Absent
  • N - Not achieved
  • S - Scholarship
  • O - Outstanding

VC (Vice Chancellor) score:
The best 80 credits from a student

Visible total:
The number of students included in/visible within the chart, with selected students omitted.

  • For example, if you deselect students who received a particular grade, such as 'A' students, these students will no longer be shown in the chart, and the visible total no longer counts them (but they are still recognised in the 'Group total').
